After a lifetime of backpacking I occasionally swap my boots for two wheels and my pack for some small bike panniers that carry everything I need for a comfortable night out in the woods. Short trips like this give me the opportunity to re-focus on what’s important and re-establish my relationship with the wild places.
Glen Feshie is particularly interesting because its Danish owner has embarked on a long-term re-wilding programme to return the area to its former glory. For many years the glen suffered from over-grazing by sheep and red deer, land use that prevented the natural regeneration of the Scots Pine forest. Today, after only a few years of keeping the deer at sustainable levels and moving the sheep out completely, the regeneration of the natural forest has been nothing short of astonishing.
